Fans of The Lord of the Rings are still wondering why the mythical old forest character Tom Bombadil did not appear in the Peter Jackson trilogy? The filmmaker first answered the question justifying his decision.
Is the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy a faithful adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s ignorance of the main character in the literary world? Anyway, back in 2001, when The Fellowship of the Ring came out in theaters, some fans criticized the film for not showing the character: Tom Bombadil.
The latter is one of the most mysterious figures in the middle of the earth, as they say “Master of Forest, Water and Hill”. Tolkien dedicated two poems to him and an appearance as well The Brotherhood of the Print. It is described as follows:
“He was too big and heavy for a hobbit, if not tall enough to be one of the big people, but he was making enough noise for it, he was walking on thick legs with big yellow boots (…) he had a blue coat and a long brown beard, his eyes were blue And shone, even the face of a ripe apple red, but with a thousand wrinkles of laughter.
Peter Jackson’s choice not to appear as this character in the saga’s first feature film forced the filmmaker to justify himself.

In one of the documentaries dedicated to the adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s work and featured in the Blu-ray Trilogy box “Appendices”, Jackson explains this choice, which has long been rebuked by “Ringers”, the absolute admirer of this work by the British author:
“If we can summarize very easily the story of the Lord of the Rings for our film, it is: ‘Frodo wears the ring.’ He must travel to Mordor to destroy the ring. From this observation, is the presence of an old-willow interesting for this story of wearing a Frodo seal? “After all, what has Tom Bombadil got to do with the ring?”
Before fans of the book point out that it’s wrong, Peter Jackson prefers to explain:
I know the episode with Tom Bombadil has connections to the ring, but it doesn’t really contribute to our story. It does not really tell us what we need to know.

With regard to the Ring, Jackson refers to the fact that Bombadil seems to know much more about the Hobbits and the Ring than he cares about. In the book, he manages to slide the item on his finger so that it does not become invisible! Something arouses readers’ curiosity about the powers of this strange and cunning character.
We have to admit that Jackson and his team tried to include the bomber in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but in a different way. Thus, the filmmaker told the magazine in 2002 Cinematic ( with the help of TheOneRing.net):
[NouspensionsquecelapermettraitàTomBombadild’êtreprésentavecunclind’oeilamusantSaufquenousn’avonspaseuletemps”
And so got the scene of the favorite character of these fans The Fellowship of the Ring. We might see him again at the center of a project taken from JRR Tolkien’s literary saga. After the arrival of the Lord of the Rings series at the beginning of the next school year, all hopes for the coming years are justified!
