Midway through their third month as DC’s new bosses, James Gunn and Peter Safran have finally revealed their plans for a universe for the comic giant, primarily comprised of movies and TV series in a strategy unlike anything Warner Bros. never had before.
DC’s plans for the future of the universe:
Chapter 1 of this universe is called “Gods and Monsters”, or “Gods and Monsters” in free translation, a part of which will take place between 2025-2027 with five films, including Superman Legacy written by Gunn, a new Batman and Robin movie titled The brave and the daringa Swamp Thing film and films centered around Supergirl and the deeper universe of DC’s team The Authority.
As for TV, there’s the animated series Commandos creature written by Gunn, the live-action series which is also a spin-off of Pacifier call waller with Viola Davis, as well as the series lanternsBooster Gold and Paradise Lost. without counting wallerwhich has part of the cast of Pacifierthere are no actors or directors associated with these projects yet.
Safran and Gunn conceived their big project with a convened writers’ room that reproduced the basic ideas created, with the group including writers such as Christina Hodson, Jeremy Slater, Drew Goddard, Christal Henry and Tom King, and revealed this plan in a video posted by social networks.
In all, the plan calls for two movies a year and two series for HBO Max in what’s billed as an eight- to 10-year plan. It might seem like it all goes very, very deep into the DC Universe, straying away from the core of Batman and Superman, but there’s a method to Gunn and Safran’s madness.

“One of our strategies is to take our diamond characters – Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman – and use them to support other characters that people don’t know about. Like what happened to the Guardians of the Galaxy) somehow. Like taking teams like The Authority, which I know is such a spectacular idea for a movie that’s completely different from superheroes. Because it’s really connected to Superman. It’s about using these well-known properties to help lead to lesser-known properties,” says Gunn.
“We promise everything from our first project will be unified,” Gunn said. “But we were very lucky in the next four projects,” added the director of the titles that were conceived under the guidance of Walter Hamada.
DC’s next projects are coming very soon, mostly Shazam! Fury of the Gods in March and The flash in June, which Gunn claims to “reboot everything.” However, Gunn gave the latter a strong compliment: “I’ll say it here Fast it’s arguably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made.
So, removing any doubts about the future of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Zachary Levi’s Shazam, Safran underlined: “These four films are fantastic. There’s no reason any of the characters or the actors who play them can’t be a part of the DCU. Nothing prevents this from happening.”
However, the manufacturer aquaman And Suicide squad he added: ““We will incorporate characters from the past, but above all we will launch new ones”. James Gunn also commented Blue Beetlewhich opens in August, stating that the film “has its own world and fits perfectly into our DCU.”
As for the Todd Phillips sequel, Joker: Folie a Deuxfollowing the Batman of Matt Reeves and the HBO Max Penguin series, Safran confirmed that such deviations from his and Gunn’s plan will be “clearly labeled DC-Elseworlds, just like the comics do.” i.e. they will continue to exist, but outside the DC universe. “The bar will be very high for projects outside of the DCU,” Safran said.
