Guillermo del Toro will adapt a Nobel Prize winner in his next film

As we nervously wait for ‘Pinocchio’ to deservedly win Best Animated Feature at the 2023 Oscars, Guillermo del Toro is already thinking about his next stop-motion film, and is aiming for a Nobel Prize.

Speaking to The TelegraphDel Toro has revealed that “The next stop-motion film I’m making is an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s ‘The Buried Giant’which I am currently co-writing with dennis kelly (‘Matilda: The Musical’), and we started the design process in two months,” Guillermo del Toro told the publication. “First I will shoot a live action movie. But in the meantime, we are developing a style guide, and in about two years, if all goes well, we will start production“.

If we take the production of ‘Pinocchio’ as a reference, which took more than two years to complete, we can intuit that 4 or 5 years remain easy for the project to become a reality.

Set in England in the Middle Ages, ‘The Buried Giant’ was released in 2015 and tells the story of an elderly couple, Axl and Beatrice, in search of their lost son. as they try to remember why he disappeared in the first place, as they suffer from a strange amnesia brought on by a mysterious mist. On their way they will meet an old man Sir Gawain, the last of King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Tableand together they will fight against the minions of the evil Lord Brennus.

The Mexican filmmaker, who also successfully premiered the anthology ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities’ last year, The Oscar will be played with ‘Pinocchio’ against ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’, ‘Red’, ‘The Sea Monster’ and the unprecedented in Spain ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On‘, produced by A24.
