Santos’ bad phase seems to have no end. This Saturday, Peixe was defeated in the classic against Palmeiras, by 3 to 1, in Morumbi, and has once again begun to look at the bottom of the Paulista league standings. For the third consecutive year the team has to fight against relegation in the competition.
The club’s numbers over the past three state campaigns demonstrate the fan’s feeling of frustration. In 30 matches played between the 2021, 2022 and now 2023 editions, the alvinegro team has won only seven times. Furthermore, there were 12 draws and 11 losses, a lead of only 36.7%.
In the period, the Santos attack was responsible for 33 balls in the net. Already the defense had leaked in 46 opportunities. In 2021, the state finished 12th overall. The following year, at 14th, and, in the current season, is at 14th place. The survey is by scorescore.
What is most impressive is that Peixe, in the previous two years, has not even come close to qualifying for the next stage of Paulistão. And the scenario repeats itself. In six fixtures so far, the side are bitter at the bottom of pool A, with six points added.
The last season the club reached the quarter-finals was in 2020, managed by Jesualdo Ferreira at the time. The campaign, however, was interrupted right there, when Santos fell in Ponte Preta, 3 to 1, in the center of Vila Belmiro. The last state title dates back to seven years ago (in 2016).
Santos will have the possibility to seek rehabilitation this Wednesday, in a duel against São Bento, at 21:35 (Brasilia time), in Canindé. Odair Hellmann’s men have just one win in the competition, as well as two setbacks and three draws.
