Another episode of The Last of Us finally arrived this Sunday (5), with the HBO series continuing to explore Joel and Ellie’s journey through the chaos created by the fungus infection. Cordyceps.
After getting to know the whole story of Bill and Frank in the previous episode, with a long flashback that took up most of the episode, now the journey of Joel and Ellie is once again the focus of the series, with an episode entirely set in present.
Joel and Ellie leave the safe haven created by Bill and Frank towards Wyoming, the US state where Joel’s brother Tommy, the character played by Gabriel Luna we met in episode 1, is supposed to be staying. they’re sure to find plenty of items that call for attention, including the Hank Williams song “Alone and Forsaken” and Ellie’s book of puns, “No Pun Intended: Volume Too.”
It is also through banter that Ellie tries to get close to Joel, even though he initially ignores her. But gradually it is possible to see the paternal instinct returning to the old smuggler, especially in the moments when he realizes that Ellie is afraid. Though he’s told the young woman she’s just a “cargo” to carry, she increasingly seems to mean more to Joel.
The journey seems uneventful, with the two stopping every hour to fill up Bill’s old truck, but things take a different turn when a detour becomes necessary. Joel and Ellie encounter a group and an item kept in Ellie’s backpack becomes badly needed.
It’s also there that we meet Kathleen, a new character in the storyline of The Last of Us played by Melanie Lynskey. The series depicts her as “the ruthless leader of a revolutionary movement in Kansas City”. Kathleen quickly shows what “ruthless” really describes her, as her gang goes in search of Joel and Ellie, but they’re also featured in another famous character quest in the game.
Speaking of the game, Joel and Ellie’s current journey through Kansas City seems to match elements of what they experienced when they made their way to Pittsburgh, including who they ultimately meet. Kathleen also appears to be hiding something sinister in one of the town’s buildings, while she pursues a relentless pursuit of one pair of acquaintances and another of strangers: Joel and Ellie.
The episode doesn’t reveal much about the outcome of this Kansas City adventure, but it does introduce new original characters as well as other well-known characters from the game, while at the same time being used a lot to delve into the relationship between Joel and Ellie. The two reluctantly talk about the events of the trip, but there is still much that one does not reveal to the other, especially about their past.
However, the trust between them grows more and more, as does the care and concern for each other’s safety. Both Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal stand out in episode 4, which ends with the two facing a threat that should open episode 5.
