Stephen King’s adaptations are like weather forecasts: not always reliable, but (above all) always welcome. In recent months, the news of Mike Flanagan’s next project dark tower series, the terrifying appearance of Rob Savage bogeyman movies and Paul Greengrass Tale came with the promise of sunny days for Master of Horror fans. Now as shown ExpirationThere’s another possible King vulgar adaptation on the horizon: Warner Bros. has acquired the crime thriller The Man From Maine. billy summers and are teaming up with JJ Abrams’ production company Bad Robot to bring it to our screens.
Emerging from King’s most familiar supernatural wheelhouse, billy summers is the dark story of a hitman forced to lead a double life in a small American town as he waits for the right moment to do the final job that will take him out of the game. It wouldn’t be a spoiler to say that things don’t go as planned and before before you know it, you’re thrown headfirst into a world of high-octane action and plenty of double-crossing. Tackling Trump-era America and exposing the monstrosity of man while delivering precisely crafted genre thrills, it’s not hard to see why the book was chosen for the film treatment.
The last samourai screenwriters Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz are writing the screenplay, originally conceived as a 10-part miniseries but now taking the form of a stand-alone feature film. However, it’s not yet known whether Abrams’ involvement will extend to a return to the director’s hot seat for what would be his first film since 2019. Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. It also remains to be seen whether the involvement of Leonardo DiCaprio’s production house, Appian Way, could pave the way for the do not look star to make an appearance, either as Billy himself or as one of the many shadowy figures he confronts.
Whoever stands in front of (and behind) the camera, the names attached thus far suggest that this King adaptation shouldn’t be overlooked.
