“I thought it might be fun to go back and see everyone. Put on those shoes, those glasses, and bald head again…”
The premiere of ‘Your Honor’, in 2020, marked Bryan Carson’s first leading role on television since his iconic character, Walter White, from ‘Breaking Bad’.
The drama series follows the story of Michael Desiato, a no-nonsense and effective judge who finds himself breaking the rules – and the law – to protect his family, after his son, Adam, is involved in a fight against the son of a convicted mobster.
“What really interested me in playing Michael Desiato (initially) was the concept of, ‘What would you do to save your son’s life?’” explained Cranston exclusively for Digital Spy.
“Any close parent I know would do anything and so would I – I would give my life to save my son’s. Would you become a criminal if it meant you would save your child’s life? The answer is yes, I would.”
Originally, ‘Your Honor’ was intended to be a 10-episode miniseriesending on a painful note, with Adam being killed in front of Michael. Cranston and the writer/creator, Peter Moffat, felt that there was more to the story to be told. Thus the idea of a second (and final) season arose.
“The first season ended in a tragic, but very fitting way,” Cranston commented. “I thought I liked that ending. I didn’t realize or think there might be ways to get a second season out of it.”
“Later, Peter Moffat came up with an idea and I thought, ‘That’s pretty good.’ So we keep going. Basically, it’s the idea of the first season. My character, Michael Desiato, jeopardizes his principles and loses his soul – his understanding of right and wrong. So, In this second batch, he explores the following idea: Can someone who has lost their soul be redeemed? Can anyone be forgiven?”
“Personally, I believe that asking for forgiveness and granting it are strengths of the human experience.. Empathy, understanding, decency, patience are qualities that I think should be admired and respected.instead of being perceived as weak or soft.”
The second season introduces us to a very different Michael from the one we met in the first. At first, he doesn’t seek forgiveness, or anything like that. He has lost everything – his child, his job, his way of life – he even looks different, with wild hair and a bushy beard. This tells us that you no longer want to take care of yourself or move on with anything.
“He has lost the sense of community and honor he had,Cranston explains.
“In the first season, we put the audience to the test. In this one, We explore grief and despair in a way that I think a lot of people can relate to. (and entertain yourself at the same time).”
Is there any teaser for how ‘Your Honor’ might end, then? “I think it will end in an opposite direction to the first. In a very honest and authentic but hopeful way. An ending for everyone – well, maybe not for everyone, but for a lot of people,” she joked.
The 10 episodes of this season will mark the end of Michael’s story. and there are no plans for a third batch of chapters. However, Could Cranston return to his character if the story was worth it?
“Never say never,” he commented. “If someone comes up to me and says you want to do a third season of ‘Your Honor’, I’d be willing to listen.. But he would have to have a very good reason, as in any project.”
On the other hand, he‘Breaking Bad’ fans are celebrating as Cranston reprises his iconic character, Walter White, on February 12. – in a Super Bowl ad, alongside her partner, Aaron Paul. The duo will recreate one of the most famous scenes of the seriestaken from the second season episode, ‘4 Days Out’.
So, it’s an honor to bring the crowd’s favorite meth cook back to life, right?
“I Came Back As Walter White To ‘Better Call Saul’ Because It Was Appropriate. I thought it was fun to go back and see everyone, put on those shoes, put on the glasses and fake bald head again,” she commented. “I said, ‘Come on, I’ll do it.’ Now we have the announcement of PopCorners in the Super Bowl. It was a lot of fun to do.”
“Shooting a drama like that there aren’t many opportunities to have fun. Being able to come back with Aaron, Vince and the whole team from ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul’ to make this announcement was a lot of fun.”
“Instead of meth, we’re cooking PopCorners and, you know – it’s a very delicious snack,“he added laughing.
‘Breaking Bad’ fans have gone crazy over images of Cranston back in character. Would it be possible to see Cranston revisit other roles in his career? Hal, the father of ‘Malcolm In The Middle’, for example?
“Do you know that “never say never”? Right now, in my position, I would consider anything,” he stated. “I am open to proposals. So who knows?”
‘Your Honor’ premieres its second season on February 3. ‘Breaking Bad’ has its seasons available in the Netflix series catalog.
