Titanic: James Cameron investigates theories about controversial door scene

You’ve probably heard a fan of Titanic assert that Jack Dawson would have survived if he had climbed into the door he placed Rose at the end of the length. The theory—and plot criticism—has haunted James Cameron since 1997 and, thinking about it, the director decided to put an end to such rumors once and for all.

As it turns out, just before the blockbuster returns to theaters this month, the award-winning filmmaker investigated what alternatives jack It is Rose could have found at the end of Titanic. After all, the character of Leonardo DiCaprio would have been saved by the same door that kept Rose (Kate Winslet) floating for hours?

The answer to this question, which has permeated the cinematographic universe for decades, may have been answered in the special Titanic: 25 years later with James Cameronreleased by National Geographic last Sunday, the 5th. That’s because, in the production, the director of Titanic teamed up with a team of experts and two actors to recreate the controversial door scene (via Entertainment Weekly).

In total, four different scenarios were tested, in order to verify in how many outcomes jack would still live with Rose. To do so, the actors faced the same obstacles as the original couple during the shipwreck, including the harrowing moment when Rose was almost drowned by another passenger in the Titanic.

That’s how, in one of the attempts, the actor of jack actually managed to balance on the door. “He is stabilized. He reached a point where he could have survived until the lifeboat arrived,” he stated. Cameroncautious.

Jack could have survived, but there are a lot of variables”, said the director, defending the true end of jack. “I think his thought process was, ‘I’m not going to do anything that puts Rose at risk’, and that’s 100% the character.”

Interestingly, the opinion of Cameron is also shared by Kate Winslet. “I have to be honest: I don’t believe we would have survived if we had climbed that door. I think it would fit, but it would have fallen and it would not have been a sustainable idea”, said the actress, in December last year, to the podcast Happy Sad Confused.
