The open world title starring the little witches of the series is surrounded by high expectations and is already the best-selling pre-order on the PC Steam store and on the PS Store in Playstation 5. And, like anything that gets a lot of attention, the product became the target of scammers, who offered free downloads.

According to the researchers of kasperskyseveral sites offered the download of Hogwarts Legacy for computers, in “cracked” versions — pirated editions that do not require payment due to code violations. However, when downloading and running the software, users quickly realize that they have, in fact, installed malware: from adware, with unwanted ads, to trojans, which harvest information.

How to avoid scams and malware by downloading games

Here are some tips from Kaspersky experts to prevent your computer from being infested with malware while downloading a game:

  • It is safer to buy and download games only from official websites. Don’t trust “unmissable offers” or sites that promise to offer an expensive game as a gift – most of the time it’s a scam;
  • Whenever possible, protect your accounts with two-factor authentication. Also, it’s important to review your account settings;
  • Use strong passwords and a unique one for each account. That way, even if one of your accounts gets stolen, the others aren’t at risk. It’s safer not to use the same password for online games that you use for other services;
  • A strong and reliable security solution will help you a lot, especially if it doesn’t slow down your computer while you play.
