Even those who don’t like horror films should know the famous doll Annabelle, who first appeared on the screen in the horror saga “The Conjuring”, which began in 2013. The macabre figure, who has already won three films of her own, does not exist only in fiction . In fact, you’re inspired by a real toy that wasn’t originally dark at all. Next, we will tell the true story of Annabelle.
Just as the ‘Conjuring’ franchise is inspired by the pair of demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren – played in the films by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga – the Annabelle of the films is based on a doll who was the central figure in one of the most celebrities investigated by the duo. By the way, if you want to know more about the Warrens, here are 10 facts about the couple’s real life.
the real annabella
Unlike what we see in the films of the ‘Conjuring’ universe, the real Annabelle doesn’t have the sinister look of her cinematic counterpart. Rather, she is a simple rag doll, with big eyes and a friendly smile, named Raggedy Ann.
Raggey Ann, by the way, was modeled after a rag doll owned by the daughter of children’s illustrator and author Johnny Gruelle (1880-1938). A literary success, the character was also marketed as a toy in the United States, starting in the 1910s.
There are also those who believe that the North American doll inspired another creation, Emília, from Sítio do Picapau Amarelo. After all, Monteiro Lobato, who lived in the United States for a few years, even included Raggedy Ann as a character in ‘Reinações de Narizinho’.
The True Story of Annabelle

Present in many American homes, the Raggedy Ann doll has ended up involved in a history of possession. In 1968, a nursing student named Donna ended up needing the help of Ed and Lorraine to investigate her doll, which had been a gift from her mother.
Donna and Angie, her roommate, had witnessed strange situations with Raggedy Ann. They had the impression that the doll was watching them and, on occasion, they were sure that the toy had moved. A friend of theirs, Lou, who also frequented the house, even claimed that on two occasions the doll attacked him.
A medium who investigated the doll assured that this Raggedy Ann belonged to Annabelle Higgins, a child who would die at the age of seven and whose spirit possessed the toy. Called in to investigate the case, Ed and Lorraine said that Annabelle’s spirit was not satisfied with remaining in the doll. So Annabelle was looking for a human host.
Annabelle is guarded
After a priest performed an exorcism in the girls’ apartment, the couple pledged to keep the doll. It has since been on display at the Warrens Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut.
After the Warrens’ deaths, the couple’s son-in-law, Tony Spera, runs the museum and its collection. Recently, the box the doll is in was repaired and Raggedy Ann/Annabelle was temporarily removed. And of course, every care has been taken in the process. Therefore, there was no shortage of holy water to avoid the worst. After all, true or not,
