Trailer and theatrical release date for ‘Red Rocket’, the Sean Baker film that has been applauded at festivals such as Cannes and San Sebastian.
The already essential Sean Baker just released his new movie, ‘Red Rocket‘, at the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival in its twenty-first edition.
After its presentation at the Cannes Festival, and the applause received at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, the film reached the Canarian competition shortly before its premiere in Spanish commercial theaters next friday may 6.
And it is that everything Baker does interests us. Present at festivals and lists of the best of the year since she managed to make herself known with ‘starlets‘ (2012), became really necessary on the circuit with his last two jewels, ‘tangerine‘ (2015) and ‘The Florida Project‘ (2017), the latter achieving Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for its luxurious supporting actor, Willem Dafoe.
Attentive as A24, production company where its cinema seems to have found an ally, we were surprised by the news that appeared in Variety at the end of 2020 about this new project,’Red Rocket‘, a title that was secretly shot in Texas and that was only known about a week after starting post-production.
Presented as an independently produced comedy, Baker launched into the project in a collective effort within the independent circuit to reactivate filming, following, of course, all relevant security protocols. The plot will introduce us to Mikey Saber, a disgraced porn star who returns to his hometown of Texas, despite the fact that no one really wants him back.
simon rexprotagonist of the title, began his most mainstream filmography on television ‘Jack & Jill‘ (Randi Mayem Singer, 1999) to later specialize in parodies of all kinds with titles like ‘It seems to me that… I know what you yelled last Friday the 13th‘ (John Blanchard, 2000), ‘ScaryMovie 3‘ (David Zucker, 2003), ‘ScaryMovie 4‘ (David Zucker, 2006), ‘Pledge this!‘ (William Heins, Strathford Hamilton, 2006), ‘Superhero Movie‘ (Craig Mazin, 2008), ‘boy-toy‘ (Christie Will, 2011), ‘scary Movie 5‘ (Malcolm D. Lee, 2013) and ‘Avengers of Justice: Farce Wars‘ (Jarret Tarnol, 2018).
“‘Red Rocket’ puts its destiny in the hands of a central character: Mikey Saber”, explained Manu Yáñez from Cannes. “When Mikey sets out to charm a childish donut shop clerk and the film takes on the seams of a romantic comedy, the viewer finds himself on the side of the rogue protagonist. And yet, as he discovers throughout the film , the protagonist is also the incarnation of the most pernicious impulses of the Yankee spirit, those that ride to the conquest of success at any price.Victim and executioner at the same time, Mikey is a character-paradox around which Baker builds his exalted portrait, at the limits of realism, of an America whose dreams seem to have turned into nightmares”.
Co-written with Chris BergochBaker’s regular companion, has Drew Daniels in the direction of photography, good news after his work in ‘comes at night‘ (Trey Edward Shults, 2017), ‘A moment in time (Waves)‘ (Trey Edward Shults, 2019) or the series ‘euphoria‘.
