Paulinho da Viola is honored by Marisa Monte: ‘Fine and elegant music’

“Paulinho was born in the midst of music. His father, Your Cesar, from the world of choro, from the Conjunto Época de Ouro. He lived with some of the greatest Brazilian musicians in his childhood, at home, in intimacy. In his youth, he also lived with the great samba savvy.

Your music is fine. Your sambas, elegant. Its harmonies are rich, its melodies are complex. He makes a unique, sophisticated and original samba, a unique and personal dialogue between choro and samba, the result of his unique experience.

I met Paulinho in person for the first time backstage at one of his shows, at Teatro dos Quatro, in Rio de Janeiro. From then on, our lives crossed several times and we developed a relationship of partnership and friendship. We have several things in common — the fact that we are from Rio and we love samba and Portela. We are reverent towards the past, we like history.

One of the greatest pleasures for me was spending a few afternoons listening to LPs at his house.
