Years later, Marisa honored the 80 years of Paulinho in testimony given to Peter Only at the Special 80 Years of Musicfrom the Rolling Stone Brazil. Check out:

“Paulinho was born in the midst of music. His father, Your Cesar, from the world of choro, from the Conjunto Época de Ouro. He lived with some of the greatest Brazilian musicians in his childhood, at home, in intimacy. In his youth, he also lived with the great samba savvy.

Your music is fine. Your sambas, elegant. Its harmonies are rich, its melodies are complex. He makes a unique, sophisticated and original samba, a unique and personal dialogue between choro and samba, the result of his unique experience.

I met Paulinho in person for the first time backstage at one of his shows, at Teatro dos Quatro, in Rio de Janeiro. I was introduced by my father [o engenheiro Carlos Monte foi diretor cultural da escola e é autor de um livro sobre a Velha Guarda], who already knew him from Portela. I was starting to sing.

From then on, our lives crossed several times and we developed a relationship of partnership and friendship. We have several things in common — the fact that we are from Rio and we love samba and Portela. We are reverent towards the past, we like history.

One of the greatest pleasures for me was spending a few afternoons listening to LPs at his house. He has an amazing disco and is a great DJ. we did shows [começando com uma apresentação no Heineken Concerts, de 1997, no Rio, e culminando com a turnê Paulinho da Viola Encontra Marisa Monte, em 2017] and we recorded. We ended up becoming partners in a song composed together with Arnaldo Antunes (“Luck charm”). love the Paulinho. For me, it’s always a joy, something inspiring to be around him.”
