The 61-year-old guitarist spoke to PEOPLE about how the discovery of the disease affected him personally and artistically.
Andy Taylorguitarist and founder of Duran Duran, spoke openly about his diagnosis of prostate cancer. In an interview with Peoplethe musician told about how he discovered himself in 2018 with stage 4 of the disease and how the news has affected him since then.
“The first thing I thought of was when was the last time I had a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test,” said Taylor, who noticed the first symptoms of the disease while running, an “arthritic pain” followed by the perception of nodules in his lymph nodes, he said.
“My father died of the prostate, so there was the family history. I thought that might be it, and it was.”
“No matter how hard [o diagnóstico], is a death sentence. So you kind of walk out of the hospital in a stunned silence, because we’re never prepared for that.”
Today at 61 years old, Taylor keeps his cancer under control due to treatment with a drug called abiraterone acetate, which has allowed him to continue dedicating himself to music.
Even so, he kept the diagnosis a secret from Duran Duran himself until April 2022, when he had to leave a group performance in Ibiza, where he lives, to dedicate himself to treatment. At the time, the group was being announced on the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame.
“It was the weekend Duran Duran played Ibiza and it was kind of ironic because I wasn’t there.”
On the eve of the release of a new solo album, Man’s a Wolf to a ManAndy Taylor reinforces that he remains optimistic in the fight against the disease:
“I’ve been trying to stay alive and live my life, which I’m not going to give up.”
