For the Queen guitarist, the track “Stone Cold Crazy” may have helped in the creation of thrash metal

Brian Maylegendary guitarist Queenanswered what he thinks about the help of the British band to invent thrash metal, a genre consolidated by groups like Anthrax, megadeth, metallica It is slayer. According to the musician, part of it would have started with the track “Stone Cold Crazy,” from disk Sheer Heart Attack (1974).

In an interview with Guitar World (via Ultimate Classic Rock), May recalled that the song was written in the first rehearsals of Queenbut it took a while to gain space on one of the albums: “It was one of the first songs we played together. Weird, isn’t it?”

“The original version sounded like a lot of other stuff that was going on at the time, with a quieter riff, it wasn’t too fast-paced. But I thought, ‘The lyrics are frenetic, so the music should be frenetic too.’ So I put in this riff, which people tell me was the birth of thrash metal. I’m not sure about that, but it was unusual to play at that tempo back then,” continued the guitarist.

According to Brian, the band themselves didn’t take the track seriously at first. He further highlighted that “Stone Cold Crazy” managed to capture the essence of a live recording because it was done in a few takes in the studio.
