Germano Mathias, the “samba professor”, dies at the age of 88

The musician, who was the author of ‘Minha Nega na Janela’ and had a particular way of interpreting, always in a syncopated way, was facing severe pneumonia

Singer and sambist Germano Matthias died this Wednesday, aged 22, at the age of 88. The confirmation came from his producer, Angélica Tobias. According to her, the musician was dealing with very severe pneumonia. The death also inspired a post on Germano’s official Facebook account: “At this moment, unfortunately, we inform you that the Samba Professor has left this project. Towards the higher spheres”.

Samba catedrático was, in fact, one of his nicknames, above all for the peculiar way in which he interpreted the sambas, always in a syncopated way, and, as an accompaniment, the joke with the lid of a jar of grease, a legacy of the shoe shiners of the Praça da Sé, with whom he lived in the early 1950s.

Germano was born in the neighborhood of Even, July 2, 1934, son of Portuguese immigrants. At the age of 14, he was invited to join the Rosas Negras samba school, in the drum section.

He worked as a huckster, peddler, and soap and ointment salesman until he began his career as a musician on October 26, 1955, when he performed at the Looking for a starfrom the program Caravan of joy, which J. Silvestre, Cláudio Luna and Élcio Álvares had on Rádio Tupi in São Paulo. he defended My Deny at the window, a composition of his with Firmo Jordão which would later become one of his hits on Polydor. He was the best out of 300 applicants and won a fourteen month contract with Tupi.

In 1957 he won the Trophy Rocchetta Pinto male revelation (along with Maysa, who won female revelation), which boosted her career. He was already known when he started recording compositions by Ze Keti, whom he met in Mangueira, in Rio.

The success, however, did not last long: Germano stopped being invited to concerts and making records to work as a criminal justice officer.
