More than 80,000 articles from the archives of David Bowie were delivered to Victoria and Albert Museum, London (V&A)which is expected to open an area dedicated to the artist in 2025, the museum has announced.
the creation of David Bowie Center for the Study of the Performing Artsin East London, will offer unprecedented access “to the creative process of a musical innovator, a cultural icon”, to both the general public and researchers, the museum underlined in a statement.
Materials include handwritten song lyrics, letters, sheet music, instruments and awards, as well as costumes by Ziggy Stardust from 1972 or creations for the tour Aladdin Sane since 1973.
The artist’s archive, which passed away in 2016, includes 70,000 photographs, prints and negatives.
“The V&A is thrilled to become the custodian of this incredible archive and to be able to show it to the public,” said museum director Tristram Hunt.
“Bowie’s radical innovations through music, theatre, film, fashion and style (…) continue to have a major influence on design and visual culture and inspire creators such as Janelle Monáe, Lady Gaga, Tilda Swinton or Raf Simons,” he added. . .
The operation was made possible thanks to the heirs of David Bowie and a donation of 10 million pounds ($12.1 million, 62.5 million reais) from the Blavatnik Family Foundation and Warner Music Group.
