Actress Cate Blanchett (“Tár”) starred in the music video for the song “The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte”, by veteran band Sparks.
The clip shows Blanchett wearing a yellow dress and headphones, occasionally dancing to music sung by Russell Mael, who is standing behind her. The other member of the band, Ron Mael, also appears in the clip, sitting at a table, having a coffee.
Interestingly, the bizarre dance Blanchett does in the clip was unplanned. Russell Mael explained that it was an improvisation by the actress. “That’s what she wanted to do with that song. She came in with the red headphones that she’s wearing in the video and … it looked like she’s been on stage before or something,” she joked in an interview with variety.
“He’s really adopted a character in the video,” added Ron Mael. “The way she arranged what she did to be kind of still in the verses and then hyperactive in the choruses was perfect for the song.”
“The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte” will be part of a self-titled album, the 26th album of the band’s career, which will be released on May 26th.
The clip was directed by brothers Russell and Ron Mael, in collaboration with Richie Starzec (who worked as an assistant director on “Last Night in Soho”).
Cate Blanchett is one of this year’s Oscar favorites for her work on the acclaimed drama “Tár.” The Sparks band won a special prize at the Cannes Film Festival 2021 for the soundtrack of the musical “Annette”.
