Singer-songwriter Sueli Costa dies

The artist’s name is among the great MPB lyricists, with Cacaso and Tite de Lemos

Singer and songwriter Sueli Costa, one of the big names in MPB, died this Saturday, aged 4, at the age of 79 in Rio de Janeiro. She had her songs re-recorded and/or performed by music icons such as Elis Regina Angela Ro Ro, Ney Matogrosso, Simone, among others. The vigil takes place at the São João Batista cemetery in Rio. The cause of her death was not disclosed.

Collaborating with João Bosco, Gonzaguinha and Aldir Blanc, in the 70s, Sueli Costa was born into a house of musicians. Her mother, pianist, was also a choir director. It was at her home, watching her family, that she learned to train her ear and became, first of all, a listener of different genres, such as Bossa Nova, popular at the time.

In the late 1960s, the composer met Nara Leão, then the voice of the show Opinião, in Rio. She was the first of many stars she came into contact with, composing, in the 70s, iconic MPB songs, such as “Coração Ateu”, performed by Maria Bethânia. In her 50-year career, Sueli Costa leaves a legacy in voice, piano and music literature, with 6 albums and several singles.
