‘Music is a universal language’, say the artists who will perform at the festival this Saturday
OR Lollapalooza 2023 starts this weekend and the duo Sofia Tukker will make its debut at the festival this Saturday 25th. This will not be the first time for DJs to come to Brazil. Indeed, the American Tucker Halpern and German Sophie Hawley-Weld they are much more connected to the country than most international attractions.
This is because the artists bring the Brazilian Portuguese lyrics to electronic sound, like the song drank, which has over 100 million plays on Spotify. In an interview with StadiumSophie explains that her connection to Brazil goes back many years.
The artist spent six months in Rio de Janeiro on an exchange program and fell in love with the music there. At college he meets Tucker and, with the collaboration of the Brazilian poet Chacal, they begin to mix bossa nova with house music.
“He [Tucker] he saw me play at an event we were both invited to and he remixed one of my songs on the spot. It was so natural that we started collaborating and we haven’t stopped since,” explains Sophie.
“Brazil has become an important part of our identity from the beginning and I felt a real connection to the country through Sophie. Today I feel much closer here than before,” adds Tucker.
In addition to the collaboration, this artist’s bond is also manifested in the shows he has performed here. “It’s very special for us to play Brazil every time we go, because people can sing the songs in a different way and really understand the meaning,” says the DJ.
Sophie also comments that her musical references range from Anitta and Ludmilla to Vanessa da Mata, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. On this unlikely mix of inspirations for her electronic beats, she points out: “We make music that inspires, even if it’s not traditional. Sofi Tukker is really the union of our minds, inspirations and creativity. Tucker comes more from electronic music and I really love Brazilian music, so it feels like a very natural combination.”
Tucker adds, “I think we both bring such different things to the table and we wouldn’t be as good separately. We really believe in combining our two brains to make art.”
Show at Lollapalloza
The duo’s performance will be a complete set from their latest album, Wet tennis, released last year. The duo guarantee that the presentation will be a “complete experience”, with dancers, Sofi on guitar and large screen projections.
“Music is a universal language and we hope our audience will connect with the positivity and togetherness we offer on this album,” says Sophie.
