The new work brings 11 new songs about love, desires and self-knowledge
When he entered the studio in late 2021, Adriana Calcanotto he had 18 new songs at his disposal, something extraordinary in his career. All signed only by her, they were songs that had been composed since 2016.
Through this kind of magic that only the goddess of music can do – in this period the singer had other projects, such as the album Só, released in 2020, with chronicles on the pandemic -, 11 of these songs found each other, and in form , in the album wandering. It is the 13th of Adriana’s career, which arrives on digital platforms this Friday 31st.
In the opening lane wandering, Trial of the Nine, Adriana presents her identity: “I have an Italian body / I was born in Brazil / A Lusitanian soul / The African motherland”. “This record speaks of choices and non-choices. And it confirms that the choice I made to be wrong in the world is mine, but I already had it as a Sephardic heritage”, philosophizes Adriana, regarding the recent discovery that she has Jewish ancestry.
Still inside Trial of the Nine, the singer says she has “joy as litmus test”. She is a reaffirmation of modernism, the sun of bossa nova and tropicalist ideas, thoughts of which she has always been a faithful follower. Everything appears, naturally and automatically, on the disc.
About love
What we are and what we choose is also present Who told you?, a song in which Adriana questions limiting beliefs about love, such as difference in age, race or biological sex. “You don’t want me because I’m a woman,” she says an excerpt from the song. Hence the identity looks not only to the individual, but also to the collective.
Trace I brought my fantasy to samba brings echoes of Yellow shirtclassic of Aria Barroso. In both songs the characters go on a spree. The character created by Barroso chooses to be happy with the revelers between one carnival and another. Adriana’s prefers the awareness of feeling unhappy.

Individuality
In the song that closes the disc, Nomadic, Adriana returns to the theme of individuality. In it the quotes are from the painter Lygia Clark, when she says “the home is the body” – also the motto of nomads -, and from the composer Gilberto Gil, who offered him a reflection during a European tour, in 2021: “No there it’s something that’s not working.”
The sentence was uttered by Gil in the middle of those normal perrengues of a tour. “Gil lives up there, but at the same time he talks to everyone. I took that sentence beyond its simplicity, like a verse, a life motto,” says Adriana. The song’s lusty beat arose from the vibration of the bus they were on. Adriana, sitting on the floor of the vehicle, composed it with her guitar. Gil knew part of the song. Now you will hear your final result.
At his side on the album, Adriana has, in the base band, Alberto Continentino (bass and piano), Davide Moraes (guitar and guitar) e Dominic Lancellotti (drums and percussion), as well as herself on guitar. marlon seven AND Alberto Continentino play different wind instruments. Together they guarantee the polyrhythm imprinted in most of the pieces, to the great liking of the composer.
This will be the formation that Adriana will take for the tour – Alberto and Davi will not participate, due to commitments, respectively with Caetano Veloso and Marisa Monte – which will leave on May 24th from Coimbra, Portugal.
Tribute to Gal Costa
Between the end of April and the middle of May, Adriana Calcanotto perform seven performances of the tribute show Gal: Holy things remain in cities such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Porto Alegre. The direction will be shared between Adriana and black markproducer he worked with Gal Costa in the last 9 years of his life.
Adriana says that Preto, inviting her to the project, justified the fact that, like Gal, she has already recorded from poets to very popular songs. “I replied: and in your opinion, who did I learn it from? It’s no coincidence. The invitation is legitimate,” says Adriana, reiterating how important Gal has been in her career.
Therefore, defining a repertoire of about 20 pieces was a “herculean” undertaking, as Adriana defines it. The singer went to listen to Gal’s discography and watch her interviews. The feeling is one of perplexity in the face of the singer’s legacy. “There is no more Gal”, Adriana says with conviction.

Gal and Adriana weren’t close. The meetings they had are described by Adriana as affectionate. One of them was specially marked for Adriana. She, who had just arrived from a long tour, was going to spend New Year’s Eve alone in Rio de Janeiro. Gal sent a friend to pick her up so she could attend the party she was throwing at her house.
Adriana still has a sweet memory of that day. At one point in the night, leaning on the balcony, looking at the sea of São Conrado, Gal said to him: “In seven years, will it be 2000?
