John Lennon’s ex-lover criticizes Yoko Ono: ‘She wanted to control us’

May Pang says the Beatles frontman’s wife encouraged the relationship in the beginning.

May Pang and John Lennon dated for 18 months. The courtship began when the leader of the Beatles was still married to Yoko Ono. She and she was the musician’s wife who favored the love story between the two. At the time, Pang was working as the couple’s assistant.

“Yoko said, ‘John and I don’t get along. He’s going to start seeing other people, I think you’ll be good for him,'” the former assistant said in an interview with The New York Post.

However, for Pang, Lennon’s wife took advantage of the situation: “Yoko wanted me to be his girlfriend so she could control the relationship.” “It’s almost surreal. In a way, Yoko took advantage of it, because I was naive. But she also gave me a gift. John and I fell in love.”

The relationship ended after Lennon traveled with Yoko for a weekend to Dakota to see a hypnotist in an attempt to give up smoking. “John said to me, ‘Yoko’s letting me come back.’ I asked whose idea it was, and he said, ‘Nobody.’ That was the end of it,” she said.
