Bassist and vocalist was relegated to a very specific role in this song, released in the 1970s, which irritated him.
It is common that, over time, musicians end up getting sick of their best known songs. However, the case of Gene Simmons with one of the greatest hits of thekiss it’s quite peculiar, as he never liked the song.
In an interview with the radio program The Howard SternShow (via loudwire), the vocalist and bassist of the masked group admitted that he never sympathized with “I Was Made for Lovin’ You”. First single and opening track from the album Dynasty (1979)the song distanced itself from the hard rock sound of the group to flirt with a danceable rhythm, in reference to the disco music in vogue at the time.
the strangeness of simmonssupporter of the character devil in the band, with “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” it happened soon when your partner Paul Stanley, guitarist and also vocalist, presented the composition to him. And the bad feeling came right after he thought that, due to the initial characteristics, he would love the composition.
“We are more or less in the year 1979, then he [Paul] come in and bring a song. In the beginning, by the way, we exchanged ideas, sort of co-wrote, and then we each went on our own. we go on our own. And then he walks in, says, ‘I have a song for you’.”
From then on, the dialogue took place as follows, according to the report:
Gene Simmons: What is the name of the song?
Paul Stanley: I was made for lovin’ you.
Gene: Oh great. What’s the first verse?
Paul: Tonight…
Gene: And the second?
Paul: I want to give it all to you…
Gene: Yeah! I know what you mean by that.
Paul: In the dark…
Gene: This is awesome! And there?
Paul: There is something I want to do…
Gene: This is really cool! What is my part in this song?
Paul: Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo…
The fact of Stanley have limited the participation of simmons on the track to a choir very bubblegum in falsetto in the chorus left the bassist a little indignant. And then he admitted to hating the song to this day, despite its huge success.
I said: ‘no, wait a minute, I’m the God of Thunder’ (‘God of Thunder’). I hate that song to this day. Except when we play it in sold-out stadiums, people jump up and down wildly, so I sing along.”
Heavy metal fans like “I Was Made for Lovin’ You”
Also participating in the interview, Paul Stanley revealed that there was some fear of the kiss in playing “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” at certain shows. Sometimes the band performs at heavy metal festivals, which makes you think that this song would not be suitable for the audience there.
In the end, though, everyone ends up enjoying it when the catchy music is played.
“Sometimes we’ll find ourselves at a festival, headlining, with all these heavy metal bands. In the beginning, we’d say, ‘Are we really supposed to play this?’ You have these people onstage, with the lead singer growling. But then we start with ‘doo, doo, doo’ – and the audience sings with enthusiasm. And that’s the beauty of the song. It hits the heart.”
