The sixth edition of the Favela Jazz Festival arrives in São Paulo this Sunday (30) and will take place in Jardim Boa Vista, west of the capital. With a female line-up, the event focuses on female representation in the Brazilian art scene and, primarily, in jazz. Admission is free.
Created by the Jazz na Kombi project, which aims to bring free musical performances to public venues, the festival features Izzy Gordon, Vera Figueiredo, Sintia Piccin Sexteto, Ladybird Quartet, Lilian Estela and Funmilayo Afrobeat Orchestra among the highlights. Watch:
Starting the program with the “Influences of Jazz” workshop, Lilian Estela, São Paulo singer and composer with a BA in Literature from the USP (University of São Paulo) and violinist Ricardo Potí, present a collection of leading North American jazz artists.
The first shows are on behalf of Ladybird, a quartet made up of young instrumentalists, Lilian Estela and Izzy Gordon, who this year celebrates 30 years of career with the show “Rainhas”.
After a round of conversations on women in music, approaching artistic trajectories, difficulties and achievements in the field of jazz, it will be the turn of Vera Figueiredo’s shows with the new show “Tambor”. The title refers to African culture. Next, the presentation will be by Sintia Piccin with her recent release “Freedom of Mind”.
The Funmilayo Afrobeat Orchestra band closes the evening. The name of the group afrobeat, formed in 2019, pays tribute to the pioneer of the struggle for freedom, voting rights and social justice of Nigerian women.
