The president also posted a note of regret in honor of the singer, who died on Monday (8), aged 75
The president Luis Inacio Lula da Silva declared on Tuesday (9) official three-day mourning for the death of Rita Lee. The singer died on Monday night (8), aged 75.
Earlier, Lula used social media to honor Rita. In the note of condolence, the president wrote:
“Rita Lee Jones is one of the biggest and most brilliant names in Brazilian music. Singer, songwriter, actress and multi-instrumentalist. An artist ahead of her time. She thought the title Queen of Rock was inappropriate, but the nickname does justice to her trajectory.”
The passage mentions Rita Lee’s interview for the cover of Rolling Stone Brazilthe last made by the singer in life, in which she declared:
“I like being called the ‘patron saint of freedom’ more than the ‘queen of rock’, which I find a bit cheesy…”
With official mourning, the flags of Brazil are flown at half mast in official buildings and institutions.
Rita Lee died at her residence in São Paulo, surrounded by her family, according to the singer’s official death note, shared by her press office, this Tuesday (9).
The wake, open to the public, will take place this Wednesday, the 10th, at the Planetarium in Ibirapuera Park, in the South Zone of São Paulo.
