Nirvana’s Courtney Love reveals discarded ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ lyrics

‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ is one of the biggest hits in Nirvana history – and it could have gone very differently

Smells Like Teen Spirit” is one of the greatest hits of the Nirvanaiconic grunge band (rock subgenre) formed by Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl It is Krist Novoselic, but it could have been a bit different. Second courtney lovesinger and widow of cobainthe song had lyrics discarded.

While participating in the podcast 60 Songs That Explain The ’90s (via NME), from Rob Harvillathe leader of lard hole commented on the relationship with Kurt Cobain, as well as lyrics that the singer wrote for the legendary song.

In the conversation, courtney love also revealed how cobain he wrote “Dumb” in 20 minutes in Amsterdam. “Some of these [letras descartadas] were in these diaries and some of them are unpublished,” he said. Then she read the verses:

Right away, love revealed other discarded verses for “Smells Like Teen Spirit“: “We merge ahead this special day / this day giving amnesty to sacrilege” / “A denial / and from strangers / a revival / and from favors / here we are now / we’re so famous / here we are now / entertain us.” The free translation is:

We merge ahead on this special day / this day giving amnesty to sacrilege / A denial / and of strangers / a rebirth / and of favors / here we are now / we’re so famous / here we are now / entertain us.

After exposing the discarded lyrics for the song, the artist took the opportunity to give her opinion. “[A versão oficial] it’s a different song,” he said. “The only consistencies it maintains are: ‘Load up on guns and bring your friends‘, It is ‘little group has always been and always will until the endand that.”

Finally, courtney love commented which discarded verse she would like to see in the final version of “Smells Like Teen Spirit“: “Who will be the king and queen / of all the outcast teens.” As justification, she explained how that part would have “helped my life a little better by coming to terms with the shit me and my daughter have.”
