Without despising their own hit, Goo Goo Dolls return to Brazil four years after the first show
Goo Goo Dolls brought reflections, albeit shallow, on the frightening evolution of social networks with the album Miracle Pill (2019). For John Rzeznik, lead singer of the band, the perception about the internet has not changed in the last four years since the release of the album. “What bothers me the most about social media is seeing TikTok destroying the music industry for artists,” she said in an interview with Rolling Stone Brazil.
Ironically, “Iris,” the band’s biggest hit, went viral on the video social network, bringing a mixed feeling to the musician: “I’m grateful whenever something I do is recognized, but it doesn’t change how I feel about TikTok. It’s like a new generation discovered music, and that’s what I carry with me. ‘Iris’ resonated with a new audience.”
The track, written for the film’s soundtrack City of Angels (1998), continues as the greatest success of the Goo Goo Dolls after more than 20 years. The scenario, however, does not bother Rzeznikwhich demonstrates, once again, gratitude for the hit: “I never get tired of playing ‘Iris,’ because I never got tired of living in a house and paying my bills [risos]. Having such a popular song is very rare. I would be ungrateful if I didn’t like this track. Pointing the mic at the audience and hearing everyone sing the entire lyrics is amazing.”
Goo Goo Dolls is one of the attractions of Best of Blues and Rock, a festival that takes place on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of June, at Ibirapuera Park, in São Paulo. The event features presentations by extreme, Tom Morello, buddy guy, steve vai, Dead Fish, Evil, Nanda Moura, Day Limns It is Will!.
