In 2008, Astrud Gilberto was honored at the 9th edition of the Latin Grammy. Fifteen years ago, the Brazilian singer, who died on Monday (5), received an award for her “musical excellence”, alongside five other singers: Estela Raval (Argentina), Angelica Maria (Mexico), Vikki Carr (born in the US but famous for songs in Spanish), Maria Dolores Pradera (Spain) and Cheo Feliciano (Puerto Rico).
Astrud Gilberto married the singer-songwriter Joao Gilberto in 1959, and it was because of her relationship with him that she started singing. João, considered by many to be the inventor of bossa nova, invited her to participate in some recordings, including “The Girl From Ipanema”, an English version of the song “Garota de Ipanema”, by Vinicius de Moraes It is Tom Jobim. The track, which also featured the American jazz musician Stan Getzwon Song of the Year at the Grammyin 1964.

Astrud and João moved to the United States in 1963 – the singer continued to live in the country even after the couple separated, a year later.
Astrud ended his journey on stage in 2002. In 2003 he would release his last album from his 19-disc discography. Years later, in 2022, Rita Lee won the same award for musical excellence.
Astrud Gilberto dies
Died, on the night of this Monday (5), the singer Astrud Gilberto. She was 83 years old. The death was communicated by the singer’s social networks and confirmed by her granddaughter, Sofia Gilbertoin the early hours of Tuesday (6) (via Who).

Life is beautiful, as the song says, but I’m here to bring you the sad news that my grandma became a star today and is next to my grandfather João Gilberto. Astrud was the real girl who took bossa nova from Ipanema to the world. She was the pioneer and the best.”
