Why working with Nightmare On Elm Street’s Robert Englund for Stranger Things Season 4 was an “incredible” experience for the prosthetic team

Warning: spoilers ahead of time for volume 1 of Strange things Season 4 on Netflix.

The long awaited fourth season of Strange things has finally arrived on Netflix, with a new series of character challenges spread across the globe and a terrifying new villain. In truth Strange things style though, Vecna wasn’t the only element of the season that could send shivers down your spine, thanks none other than horror icon Robert Englund from Nightmare on via Elm series that plays the fucking Victor Creel. Prosthetic makeup artist Barrie Gower spoke to Gossipify about her experience in Strange things Season 4, including why working with Englund was “incredible”.

The Netflix show often includes elements of iconic 1980s movies, and Vecna’s ability to penetrate the minds of her victims to torment and ultimately kill them provided a level of horror worthy of Freddy Krueger. Add Robert Englund in the role of Victor Creel – the man who gouged out his eyes after being mentally tormented and then unfairly imprisoned for the murder of his family – and horror fans have had a lot of fun. According to prosthetic makeup artist Barrie Gower, working with Englund to perfect the look of the sunken eyes was a great experience for the makeup team … and a surprise. Gower shared:

As the monsters and the big nerds grow up, [fans] Of the big horror franchises (of course, Stranger Things 4 has a lot of nods to the Nightmare on Elm Street series), I was a huge Freddy Krueger fan growing up. I had a shrine on my bedroom wall covered in 80s Freddy Krueger posters. We didn’t realize we were going to work with Robert Englund on the show until we had already created Vecna, then we were asked to do makeup for Victor Creel. And we didn’t know it was Robert. So we were really excited about the character, and then we heard it was Robert, so we were like kids in a candy store. We couldn’t believe we were going to work with one of our 80s heroes, being big fans of Freddy Krueger.

What better surprise for a long time Nightmare on via Elm fan who knew that working on Netflix’s biggest horror series would involve Robert Englund himself? Victor Creel may not look exactly like Freddy Krueger, but the actor certainly delivered some chilling moments associated with the prosthetics that completely sold out what the character had made to himself. Creel did not need the full-body prostheses that Vecna needed (and can Read all about Vecna’s big revelations here. ), and it’s safe to say that fans won’t forget his face anytime soon. Barry Gower continued:

My colleague Duncan Jarman sculpted Victor Creel’s prosthetics, and Duncan and I also applied Robert’s makeup for the show. So we took a makeup test in London and started with that, and it was just before the blockade that COVID started to manifest. Then we also toured for a few days in Atlanta with Robert. It was a pleasure to work with him as his question lasted about two hours in the makeup chair and he told us so many brilliant anecdotes and stories from his career. We were extremely happy. It was amazing to hear about so many of their stories.

According to the artist, the hours spent in the makeup chair are “unbelievable” when it comes to Robert Englund sharing stories about his career. Few actors can embark on a project with as much horror background as the one Englund carries on Nightmare on via Elmit is logical that he has received an actuación inolvidable mientras usaba dos horas de prótesis para un producto terminato escalofriante en la temporada 4. Cuando noted that Englund debe ser an expert in la application de prótesis en la silla de maquillaje en este punto, Gower compartment with enthusiasm:

He is an experienced professional. I can’t think of another actor who probably had multiple prosthetics attached. He therefore he knew all our materials. He knew exactly what we were doing. He knew when to close his eyes and when to turn his head. He was a true professional. So it was a tremendous opportunity for us … he has told a lot of Freddy stories and talked about a lot of other makeup effect heroes that we too saw growing. So it was a great experience. It really was.

Having played Freddy Krueger no less than five times in the 1980s alone, and not without in the years thereafter, there is no doubt that Robert Englund has had many Nightmare on via Elm stories to tell Although Victor Creel was not the character with Freddy’s methods of murder Strange thingsit was a perfect addition to the cast.

You can find Robert Englund’s performance as Victor Creel with the rigged prosthetics of Barrie Gower and his team on recording volume 1 from Strange things (opens in a new tab) Season 4 stream available with a Netflix membership now . For him Nightmare on via Elm series, you can find many of the movies both on Netflix and with an HBO Max subscription .
