The musician had been treating an autoimmune disease for four years and, according to his family, had complications in the last surgery he underwent. He was admitted to a hospital in Osasco. The wake and funeral of the musician will be reserved for the family.
Schiavon was responsible for creating the sound of RPM, with electronic pop arrangements that had a huge impact in Brazil in the 80s, in hits such as Watch 43, icy blonde, Rotations per minute AND Pirate radio. Later, he also distinguished himself in the production of soap opera soundtracks and as music director of TV Globo.
“It is with regret that the family communicates the death of Luiz Schiavon. He fought courageously against an autoimmune disease for 4 years but, sadly, he had complications in his last treatment surgery and could not resist. Luiz was, in his public figure, a teacher, songwriter, founder and keyboardist of RPM, but above all a good son, nephew, husband, father and friend. For this reason, the family has decided that the farewell ceremony will be reserved for close relatives and friends, and we kindly ask that the fans and the press understand and respect this decision,” the statement read.
“We hope you will remember him with the mastery and energy of his music, a legacy he left us as a gift and which will continue to live in our hearts. Say hello to him, listening to his chords, paying homage to him on social media, magazines and newspapers, or simply remembering him with affection, the same affection he always had with everyone who lived with him,” the statement, also shared by RMP on his Instagram, follows.
Luiz Antônio Schiavon Pereira was born in São Paulo, October 5, 1958, began studying classical piano at the age of seven and graduated from the Mário de Andrade Conservatory, in São Paulo, in 1977. He met Paulo Ricardo the the following year, aged 16, and together they founded the band Aura, influenced by English rock and which did not last long due to disagreements between the members, and later, RPM, in 1983.
Before that, however, he played rock classics at night, studied synthesizer and electro-acoustic technique, formed an instrumental trio called Solaris and immersed himself in the English new wave. At the time, with Paulo Ricardo living in London, the two corresponded for six months about the band’s dreams and ideals. Upon Paulo Ricardo’s return, they began composing the repertoire for the band’s first album.
At the same time. Schiavon has worked as a keyboard player and arranger for budding artists. And the future band was gaining new members. Fernando Deluqui arrived first. Paulo Pagni arrived later, replacing the drummer Junior, who left the band because he was only 16 and couldn’t play at night. The invitation for both came from Schiavon. RMP’s first record, Rpm, it was released in 1985.
The band was hugely successful in Brazil in the 1980s, but, in 1987, the members announced the first breakup of RMP.
Post-RPM
Schiavon started a new band after RPM’s demise: Projeto S, a pop-rock group, which released, with some success, a single album.
In 1991 he signed with the Stilleto label, releasing the single Alice in the mirror, with Patrícia Coelho and Tzaga Silos on vocals. The following year she embarked on a two-year open-air concert project touring Brazil. Eventually, she announced that she was leaving the stage. From then on, he returned his focus to the studio he had set up years earlier in 1988. Many of the songs recorded there became hits.
The musician was also involved in advertising, making jingles, and later, in 1996, he began his story with soundtracks for soap operas.
Traces of telenovela Globo
As arranger and composer, Schiavon has made four songs for The king of cattleamong which there were The king of cattlewith the Orchestra of the Earth, Sweet mysterywith Leandro and Leonardo, e Fireflywith John Paul and Daniel.
He also made the trail Our land (1999) and from Hope (2002), which included the song Where is my Lovefrom RPM, if it was getting back together.
The new stage of RPM
The RPM revival began to be conceived by Schiavon in 2001, shortly after an invitation received by Fernando Deluque to play together. That reunion didn’t work out, but the musician made a new project for his old band. In 2001 they released the single Real lifea Portuguese version by Paulo Ricardo for the song Leafby Han van Eijk, which was the opening theme of the BBB.
They recorded the CD and DVD MTV Revs 2002with hits and unreleased, and, by the end of that year the musicians parted ways once more – but met again over the next decade, but recordings, re-recordings and performances.
In 2004 he founded, with Fernando Deluque, the LS&D group, which will also include André Lazzarotto on vocals. Among his songs was Madrigal, the opening theme of the telenovela cabocla.
He was also, between 2004 and 2010, director of the band Domingão do Faustão. For the program he also created, with Luciana Cardoso, wife of Faustão, and Nil Bernardes, the jingle for Videocassetadas.
