Netflix knows how to tell stories very well and in 2018 decided to show it once again to the public, launching ReMastered, a series of documentary films that deal with events that changed the history of music forever.

When we think about music, we understand that the end product is something made to impact people’s lives, at the same time that music is influenced by people’s actions, fueling a mechanism that in theory has no end and in this context Remastered , it is gigantic of delving into the whole context surrounding these events.

The Netflix ReMastered Collection consists of eight documentaries that address facts that have impacted music, such as the investigation into the death of Jam Master Jay, the devil at the crossroads (here keeping the mysterious tone around Robert Johnson).

What do the documentaries tell?

The first thing that comes to mind when watching a documentary is who is involved, other than the subject. After all, you can meet the characters who name or are the reason for the documentary, which doesn’t mean you know all the people who are part of the story, and Netflix cares about this, continuously featuring those involved in the narrative.

Speaking of narration, it is organized in a fluid, almost episodic way (within the work itself) so that the themes do not escape the perception of the public, the characters (people involved) every time they appear on the screen, have their names and their relation to the presented theme and all the actions of the narration are justified with images of the era or reconstruction of the scene.

You might just know Run-DMC from their music with Aerosmith and be blown away by the trio’s impact on music history, or you might just know Sam Cooke because he saw “One Night in Miami” and none of that makes the experience of the negative audience.

Remastered: where to start?

The ReMastered Collection consists of eight documentaries, ranging in length from 48 minutes to 1 hour 24 minutes, with no direct relationship to each other (aside from being on Netflix). So the audience can choose any of the episodes to start with and not necessarily watch them all.

With that in mind, we’ve separated three tips for getting you started on the ReMastered Collection on Netflix:

The Two Deaths of Sam Cooke

Sam Cooke’s voice made him a soul star, but his outspoken views on civil rights may have contributed to his death at age 33. The Two Killings of Sam Cooke, was the first of eight documentaries to air on Netflix and features interviewees Quincy Jones, Smokey Robinson, Dione Warnick and Lou Adler.

Who Killed Jam Master Jay?

DJ Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC has had a huge impact on music and the community. But friends and family are still searching for the truth years after her unsolved murder. Featuring several of Jason Mizell’s friends and family, the documentary approaches the still-open case from multiple perspectives.

Who Shot the Sheriff – The Bob Marley Story

In 1976, reggae icon Bob Marley survived an assassination attempt during a political war in Jamaica. But who was responsible for the crime? The entire historical context of Jamaica is presented to the audience, who can thus analyze the political context of the time along with the narrative.
