the producer Joao Marcello Boscolisinger’s eldest son Elis Regina (1945-1982) , reposted on his Instagram this Thursday, July 6, an excerpt from an interview in which Elis talks about whether she would agree to do a commercial for a brand. Bôscoli’s post comes just days after Volkswagen launched an ad campaign featuring Elis and her daughter Maria Rita they seem to sing the song together Like our parentsof Belchior.
The video of the old interview was originally published by the profiles @arquivoelisregina and @trechoelisregina. This is an interview that Elis gave to Rádio Bandeirantes, in 1976. When the presenter Hélio Ribeiro asked her if she would be willing to do a commercial and, moreover, if she would agree to sing in a commercial, what would she ask . “How much are you going to ask?” asks the host.
“Lots of money!” Elis replies. “You really have to ask for a lot of money!” agrees the host. Elis then repeats: “a lot of money”.
The presenter asks how much the value would be. Elis replies: “1 bi”. The currency in force at the time was the Cruzeiro.
On the occasion of this interview, Elis presented the show Glossy fauxin which he sang the song Like our parents, recently used in an automotive advertising campaign. In the advertising piece, Elis drives an old Kombi, while Maria Rita drives an electric vehicle. The image of Elis was created by deepfake.
The campaign aroused mixed reactions and opened debates in the media and on social networks. Many enjoyed seeing a digitally recreated image of Elis in an unprecedented duet with her daughter. Others felt that the commercial used inappropriate music, as Belchior’s lyrics deal with generational conflicts during the military dictatorship. Finally, many have criticized the use of Elis in an advertising campaign more than 40 years after her death.
