A critical opinion of the singer and pianist was shared after being the subject of a highly controversial comment in the 1990s
The list of artists, bands and even entire musical styles that Keith Richards already criticized is immense. Prince, David Bowie, Guns N’ Roses, Oasis, Led Zeppelin, heavy metal and hip hop are just some of the targets of the guitarist’s fierce tongue, known for his decades-long work with Rolling Stones.
Another name devoted to having to listen to public comments from Richards is Elton John. In this case, you can’t say that the guitarist did well in his statement.
Shortly after the princess’s death Dianain 1997, Keith said that his professional colleague was an “old bitch” who “only writes songs for dead blondes”. It was a reference to “Candle in the Wind”hit that Elton created in the 1970s as a tribute to the actress marilyn monroe (died 1962) and rescuing her to honor Lady Di.
Aware of the statement, the singer and pianist did not leave it cheap. In an interview in the same year to New York Daily News (via Igor Miranda website), John maintained class, but made a point of criticizing Richards for your speeches. Not only for that: he also said that the guitarist should be out of the Rolling Stones.
“I have great respect for the Stones, but they would have been better off if they had kicked Keith out 15 years ago. I just think he’s an idiot. And I have thought so for a long time.”
Back to the blues?
the replica of Elton John extended. In the same interview, the artist revealed that he would like to see the Rolling Stones return to the blues sound they made at the beginning of their career.
“What I think the Rolling Stones they should record is a great blues record and go back to what they used to do. Things like ‘Come On’the music of Chuck Berry that they played at the beginning of their career. This is what they should do.”
pinned years later
Even though he was quiet after speaking of Elton John, Keith Richards didn’t forget about it. More than two decades later, in 2018, the guitarist returned to provoke his colleague in an interview withThe Telegraph. Upon being told that he was on a farewell tour, he reacted as follows:
“There’s more room for us! After 3 years on the road with Elton, you too would want to retire. I will believe he is serious.”
Pinned apart, the billboard reported in early 2023 that Elton John went on to own the highest-grossing tour in music history. the farewell tour Farewell Yellow Brick Road had so far generated $817.9 million from 278 shows – surpassing the Dividein Ed Sheeranwhich had the previous record of $776.4 million.
