Bassist even revealed that his “second best” album has none other than Adele as a big fan
In more than 40 years of career, the Red Hot Chili Peppers built a relatively long catalogue. There are more than 10 studio albums released, many of them extremely successful, with millions of copies sold worldwide and several hits duly charted.
Therefore, it seems quite complicated to choose which would be the best work in the midst of this catalogue, doesn’t it? Even so, flea you have your answer on the tip of your tongue — albeit with some caveats.
In an interview with Los Angeles Timesbassist and one of the founders of chili peppers was asked to name the group’s album that tops his personal list. The answer surprised not exactly because of the choice — Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991) —but for the observations made.
“I would say our best album is Blood Sugar Sex Magik. However, looking back, there are some songs that I don’t think should have made it.”
Without bothering, Michael Peter Balzary — the musician’s real name — highlighted the song that is “left over” on the disc. And he cited another work that clashes with his chosen one.
“’The Greeting Song‘ is not good enough. and the album Californication it’s really good from top to bottom. I saw Adele a while ago and she told me it was her favorite record of all time. It meant a lot to me because I’m a big fan of Adele.”
No wonder, the bassist cited the two most successful records of the red hot. Blood Sugar Sex Magikresponsible for making the group break out definitively, brings songs of the size of “Give it Away”, “Under the Bridge”, “Suck My Kiss” and “Breaking the Girl”, among others. Already Californicationseen as the work that put the band back on top, features sounds like the title track, “Around the World”, “Scar Tissue” and “Otherside”.
And the worst of the Red Hot Chili Peppers?
Even during the interview, flea was also questioned about what would be the worst album in the career of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Other artists would perhaps find a way to evade the answer, but this was not the case: he cited the debut album, The Red Hot Chili Peppersfrom 1984.
“I always regret the way we did the first one. I think the songs are really good. Our band was rocking at the time. But the jack [Irons, baterista] It is Hillel [Slovak, guitarrista] left and we hired these two other guys: Jack Sherman and Cliff Martinez. They were both great musicians, but the connection wasn’t as deep as it was with the guys we started with.”
Finally, the bassist revealed a rather curious private project for this material. The problem is getting the rest of the band to embrace the idea.
“I always wanted to go back and re-record that album, but I can never convince anyone to do it.”
