Queen: John Deacon is still ‘very much a part of’ the band, says Brian May

Even retired from music, John Deacon still has a certain relationship with Queen, according to Brian May

Even after leaving the music industry in 1997, bassist john deacon is still “very much part of queen,” second Brian May.

It is worth remembering how deacon joined the legendary British rock band in 1971 and has been featured on every studio album. The musician retired after recording the single “No One But You (Only The Good Die Young),” featured on the album ballads (1999), and did not return to queen after death of Freddie Mercury.

During an interview with The Guardian, Brian May answered a series of questions asked by fans. In one of them, someone questioned whether the guitarist had any “suggestions” that deacon would come out of queen forever, and the musician’s reason for retiring.

“All I can say is that, historically, John he was quite sensitive to stress. We all find it hard to lose Freddiebut I think John struggled particularly,” he replied. “We did a few things together in 1996: the recording of ‘No One But You‘ – the song I wrote about Freddie when we were erecting the statue to honor him in Montreux – and a concert in Paris.”

“It was supposed to open the ballet season with an incredible new work by Maurice Béjartabout mozart and the Queen. we played with John on the bass and Elton John sang with us,” continued the artist. “At that moment, John just looked at us and said, ‘I can’t do this anymore’. We knew he at least needed a break, but it turned out he never came back.”

Right away, Brian May commented how deacon remains involved with queen: “I don’t think I can go into too much detail – we have to respect the fact that John needs his privacy now – but he’s still part of the band’s machinery.”

If we have any important decision, in terms of business, it will always go through the John. This doesn’t mean he talks to us – he usually doesn’t – but he will communicate in some way. He is still part of queen.
