Strange things delivered a very different type of villain in season 4 with Vecna, who is not part of the Mind Flayer army and has the power to take out the victims in Hawkins while upside down. The show used practical effects. to turn actor Jamie Campbell Bower into Vecna whose gaze could be he recalled game of Thrones night king fan . According to prosthetic makeup artist Barrie Gower in an interview with Gossipify, it’s no accident, as Night King inspired Vecna in several key ways.
Barrie Gower and the prosthetic team of make-up effects company BGFX created the Vecna look with effects involving over 20 pieces that were applied to Jamie Campbell Bower, who lost his prosthetics while playing One before being banned from Eleven Upside Down. It took six to nine hours to complete Bower’s transformation into Vecna, whose similarities to the Night King stem from Gower’s earlier work on game of Thrones. Speaking to Gossipify, the prosthetic makeup artist explained Vecna’s connection with the Night King:
The Duffers had seen our work on Game of Thrones and really loved the Night King. They also loved our work on the HBO show Chernobyl with all the radiation burns, and I think they almost wanted a combination of the two, in a way. Realizing that they needed to design a character, a new villain, a new presence for Stranger Things 4, who would be a pretty iconic villain, being a fan of the Night King for Game of Thrones, I think they thought, “Well, why. “No? Let’s get closer to the guys who made the Night King. I think that’s part of how we got the gig, so we were very lucky for that.”
Like millions of people around the world, Matt and Ross Duffer, who have created Strange things – obviously they were fans game of Thrones that he loved the gaze of the king of the night , who was one of the main villains of the last season. Gower continued:
I think it’s also natural that many of our artists who worked on Game of Thrones also worked on Vecna. So there are probably traits of his design skills and approaches and only his sculpture styles and painting styles that can probably see references between the Night King and Vecna in some way because he was designed and created by They. . So I think that’s probably why there’s a bit of a relationship there.
The Upside Down is even more dangerous than ever in season 4, to the point where breathing air isn’t even on Steve, Nancy, Robin and Eddie’s to-do list after crossing Watergate. Demo bats (whose sounds have surprising origins ) were an immediate threat, and then Vecna grabbed Nancy just as she was about to return to her normal Hawkins.
