The new K-Pop clips feature solo debuts by Jihyo and aespa singing in English

K-pop fans are excited for two noteworthy releases this Friday (8/18). The aespa group is back with the English single “Better Things”, accompanied by a vibrant music video, while the South Korean singer Jihyo, leader of the group Twice, made her solo debut with the album “Zone”. These releases represent significant moments for both artists as aespa continues to strengthen her global presence and Jihyo embarks on a new phase in her career.

aespa in summer

“Better Things” comes after the release of the EP “My World” and, in addition to the unique personality of the female quartet, it bets on a summery atmosphere and a strong message on self-love. In the song, members Karina, Winter, Giselle and Ningning reinforce the message of self-worth with lines like: “I was never sure I loved you, but I was always sure you would let me down.” The music video follows the artists as they chase an elusive mystical creature, which leads them to a tropical paradise. But was it all a dream?

With amazing choreography, good effects, charming set design and bubblegum melody, the clip evokes a feeling of warmth and joy, typical of sunny days, like the tropical settings presented, as well as sharing a lighter and more relaxed side of the group.

aespa, formed in 2020, has proven to be a significant force in the fourth generation of k-pop. The rise of the group can be seen in 2022, with the debut at the Coachella festival and in the program “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”. Additionally, the new album, ‘My World’ debuted atop the Billboard album sales chart. To celebrate, the quartet is about to embark on a world tour, which includes a one-off performance in Brazil at Espaço Unimed, São Paulo on 11 September.

Jihyo releases a solo album

Jihyo released his first solo EP, “Zone”, this Friday (18th). The album contains seven songs, including collaborations with American rapper 24kGoldn and South Korean Heize. But the song chosen for the clip, “Killin’ me Good,” features the Twice singer as an individual highlight.

The song tells the ups and downs of a relationship, alternating scenes of a beautiful love story with a bitter separation, as well as a lot of choreography. Musically, “Killin’ Me Good” blends the established style of Twice with the heavy influence of 90s American R&B. The more intimate and repetitive melody is counterbalanced by an energetic performance by Jihyo.

The singer is the second member of Twice to release a solo project, after Nayeon, who debuted with the album “I’m Nayeon” in June 2022.
