Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan spoke about the transformations in the musical genre and how his band faces the new reality
With the numerous transformations of rock in recent years, Billy Corgan believes that new technologies are the main reason why the musical genre is no longer as innovative as it used to be.
In an interview with journalist Jen Eckert, from soundcheckthe vocalist of Smashing Pumpkins commented on how the internet “changed the unbroken narrative for about a hundred years of how people released and consumed music”.
I think there’s less of an emphasis on innovation in rock and more on kind of keeping it in its place. My own band, in isolation, sort of strives to continually innovate, even as our fans are desperate. So it’s hard to say if [o rock] it didn’t really evolve the way it should have, but that would require a different world.
Still on the transformations derived from digital, corgan says listeners’ accessibility “puts bands in a different situation when it comes to how to reach an audience,” since the internet has changed everything – journalism, politics, and even music.
