Kim Petras, the first trans singer to top the American charts, was one of the few Brazilian debuts on The Town festival program, but she didn’t do as well with Saturday’s (9/9) Wet Leg, a lesser-known song and pathologically shy band. The German pop star is 31 years old, 17 of which have been dedicated to dance pop.
With a performance below expectations, she failed to transform the Interlagos track into an effervescent dance floor, as she intended. Her performance instead found an indifferent audience, made up mainly of Bruno Mars fans, who preferred to remain seated or distract themselves with their selfies.
The German singer bet on songs with provocative titles, such as “Treat Me Like a Slut” and “They Wanna Fuck”, and included an interpretation of “Unholy”, her biggest hit, recorded with Sam Smith. But the lack of a backing band and costume changes resulted in a show with little ambition, which still faced technical problems such as microphone failures.
Petras has made a name for herself working with big names in music production, such as Dr. Luke, Cirkut and Max Martin. However, her show makes clear the difference between the studio production level and her live performance.
To make matters worse, the lack of originality of their arrangements and the amateurish performance contrastingly followed Pabllo Vittar’s famous show, which took place a few minutes earlier on a smaller stage.
