Why becoming Elizabeth star Alicia Von Rittberg thought there was a “mistake” in her audition to play Elizabeth Tudor

The story of one of the most iconic monarchs in British history comes to Starz with becomes Elizabeth, although the new historical drama tells the story of Elizabeth Tudor with a twist. The program does not begin with Queen Elizabeth I on the throne of England, but with adolescent Elizabeth after the death of Henry VIII. Alicia von Rittberg plays the future Tudor queen for the new series, but she shared with Gossipify that she actually thought there was a mistake when she was asked to audition.

Before the premiere of becomes Elizabeththe protagonist (who has also appeared in other major TV projects, including Netflix Charity and Nat Geo Genius) talked about the casting process to play such a famous character in British history. When asked about her experience of hers, Alicia von Rittberg said:

The German actress would not have considered herself a candidate to play the woman who would become Queen Elizabeth I, but she clearly went through every step of the audition process to land the role and host Starz’s latest historical drama. The network has a history of costume dramas with unexpected twists, with shows like The White Queen (with Rebecca Ferguson ) Yup the white princess (with Jodie Comer). They were both adaptations of novels by Philippa Gregory however, unlike becomes Elizabethwith episodes written primarily by executive producer Anya Reiss.

It doesn’t take long for the new miniseries to show why Alicia von Rittberg was the right choice to play young Elizabeth after her father’s death, with younger brother Edward (Oliver Zetterström) seated on the throne as a Protestant. . . María (Romola Garai) precedes her in the line of succession, albeit with the significant complication of her Catholic faith.

Her refuge with Henry VIII’s sixth and last wife, Catherine Parr (Jessica Raine), and her new husband, Thomas Seymour (played by fall of the knights alum tom cullen ) may not be as safe as you initially think. The show introduces a side of Elizabeth I’s story that doesn’t usually make it to the big or small screen and plants the seeds for which the monarch known as “The Virgin Queen” has become so famous.

Obviously, this is not a documentary and Alicia von Rittberg’s performance is the anchor the show needs with so much confusion in the plot after Henry VIII’s death. The Starz series already have a habit of recreating distant time periods to great effect, and not just with shows like The White Queen Yes the white princess. foreign became one of the biggest hits of the channel in six seasons and beyond put almost completely mid-late 18th century . becomes Elizabeth it will be a 16th century remake, and it’s not a series that fans of costume dramas will not miss.
