A study of the contribution of Benito Di Paula’s work to Brazilian music in the format of EP. This is the proposal for Benito’s new project together with his son Rodrigo Vellozo. Titled The way life wants itthe work arrived on digital platforms this Thursday (21st) and lists six songs that are the result of a reflection on the artist’s legacy in samba and music. pagoda from 70’s.
“This EP is an understanding in which we come to consider the work of my father, Benito Di Paula, as one of the foundations of the aesthetic construction of samba from the 70s onwards. We also start from understanding the magnitude of the importance of samba, of the pagode and its exponents in Brazilian popular culture“, States Rodrigo.
The way life wants it It begins with the title track, which has become a classic in samba circles across the country. The only new song, Só eu sol, is a composition by Benito, as he explains: “It’s a song from a work by the composer Francisco Tárrega. I like to bring scholars to samba, to parties.”
It doesn’t take long to follow up on the EP, written by Benito AND Adoniran Barbosa, a way to pay homage to another great name in Brazilian music. Depicting a love story in a samba club, the next track, Ela came do lado de lá, was released in 1973.
To conclude this tour of Benito’s journey, Friend of the Sun, Friend of the Moon – composed to celebrate the birth of Rodrigo – and the music Congratulations – a new registration of Garden behind the house -, where the voices of the duo mix with the grand piano in this classic from the pagode dos 80s. Both were released as singles in the process of preparing the public for the complete work.
“Recently I reflect on how certain artistic manifestations are sidelined in cultural mediation processes that seek to understand Brazilian popular culture. The very terms samba and pagode (and the artists associated with them) are often seen and understood as having less relevance to the interior of Brazilian popular music. Therefore, it is important to write our history”ends Rodrigo.
