Producer recalls how he discovered that Charles Manson intended to murder him

Charles Manson was unable to secure a musical career, but is a successful co-writer for the Beach Boys

The producer Gary Stromberg remembered how he met Charles Mansonon the podcast Stones Touring Party (via People), presented by Jordan Runtagh. Stromberg used to visit prison to see a friend, Phil Kaufmanwho, coincidentally, was the serial-killer’s cellmate.

Mansonupon leaving prison on one of the several times he was detained, he went in search of his dream of becoming a musician. Kaufman then introduced him to Stromberg, who worked at Universal at the time. “I called Russ Reagan, who led Uni Records — they had just started the record label. I said, ‘There’s a guy here, I think you should listen to him.’ He said, ‘Sure, bring him here,'” the producer recalled.

“So I went to his office. Charlie sat down and started playing. russ was like, ‘What is this?’ Embarrassed, he said, ‘I’ll give you money to make a demo.’ So we recorded a demo,” he added.

In total, five songs were recorded, including “The Love and Terror”, released in 1970. Manson is also co-author of “Never Learn Not to Love”, by Beach Boys. russ he found all the recorded songs terrible and asked them to Stromberg get rid of it. “He [Manson] He tried to contact me about trying other labels and I said, ‘Sorry, it’s not my thing. It’s out of my hands.’ We stopped talking to each other in a bad way,” he said. Gary.

Charles was also unsuccessful with Terry Melcher and, on August 9, 1969, he and his followers killed everyone present at 10050 Cielo Drive. Melcher lived at that address when they worked together.

The fate of Stromberg would be similar. “When all this shit about Sharon Tate came to light, he was arrested. Then the FBI came to me and said that when they arrested Charliethey found a list of people he intended to murder — and I was on the list,” said the producer.

He confessed that he “was scared” and therefore went to Europe, “fearing for his life”. “I knew there were other people on the streets. They were still part of the movement of Manson. I met Charlie over the course of a few months, so I knew a little about him, and I also knew that his arrest didn’t remove the threat. I kept moving around Europe until I felt safe to return,” he explained.

Charles Manson and his followers were responsible for seven murders. He died of natural causes at the age of 83, while still in prison.
