Discreet to a fault, the musician acts as pianist while Lady Gaga shares vocals with Mick Jagger on ‘Sweet Sounds of Heaven’; the new album will be released on October 20th
Mick Jagger he played a simple three-chord classic rock song while strumming the piano in his London home. It was a sunny afternoon with a little wind when the major chords began to emerge. Later, she finished the song with Keith Richards. Its gospel verses, something that reminds me of other Christian moments of the band, as in You can’t always get what you want AND It shines a lightthey begin like this: “Blessed be the Father, blessed be the Son, hear the sound of the drums as they echo through the valley and explode, yes. Let no woman or child go hungry tonight.”
Sweet sounds of heaven has a sensational start: an arpeggiated piano with a blue note or two is cut from Keith Richards’ guitar to the voice of Mick Jagger. A little further on you can hear the tone of a Fender Rhodes keyboard while Lady Gaga’s voice responds to Mick’s, as if everyone were in a church.
This is the Stones’ second single, before the release of the new album. The first was Angry, a delicious rock and roll. Hackney Diamonds, the album which, given the singles, should be nothing less than very good, will be released on October 20th. Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder, guests of the song, had already performed with the Stones. Gaga sang during the 2012 50 & Counting tour. Gimme Shelter was used on the album GRRR live. And Wonder toured with the Stones on their 1972 tour, singing Satisfaction AND Tense (Everything is fine).
This time the turnout is timid. Gaga enters again with a very high falsetto, well placed and powerful, which acts as a counterpoint to Jagger. But for Wonder, even knowing that she only played keyboards, and not vocals or harmonica, there isn’t much presence for those looking for her major trademarks. She is far from the classic clavinet funk imprint with which she does it Higher ground, for example, because it wasn’t like that. But she plays beautiful gospel keyboards.
