The 90s pop parody goes viral and becomes a real hit. He discovered the phenomenon of the “Planet of the Bass”.

Kyle Gordon, responsible for the hit that mocked dance music and really stuck, was even invited to sing at a Jonas Brothers performance; ‘Estadão’ spoke with a North American comedian to understand the phenomenon

“All the dream. What does it mean? When the beat is happy, there’s nothing to be sad about.” These verses may mean nothing when read, but they just need to be translated into English – with strange grammar, to put it mildly – and acquire the rhythm of the text. Eurodancea genre of electronic music that became popular in Europe in the 80s and 90s they became synonymous with success.

The jokes are part of the parody The planet of bassone music who now occupies the places – and heads – of WE and Europe. Just do a quick search for the result name on Tick tock To give you an idea of its success: the song is already the soundtrack of online videos containing dances and is also played in commercial establishments.

The success maker, Kyle Gordonwho lives in New Yorkor DJ Crazy Times, as the character who sings the song is called, was even invited to perform at a show of Jonas brothers In Boston. The planet of bass it officially became, according to the foreign press, the “song of the summer” in the northern hemisphere.

Understand how The planet of the bass it became a phenomenon

It all started with a 50-second video – which, today, has amassed 10.6 million views – posted on TikTok. The proportion was such that Kyle took the opportunity to release a full version of the clip and song and even an “original” imitating a VHS tape from 1997. The first has more than 3 million views.

Fans of the song began to emerge, including the woman who appears with Kyle in the video, named Biljana Electronica. Something, however, started to attract attention: Biljana is played by Audrey Trullingerbut the voice comes from Chrissi Poland.

It didn’t take long for another Biljana Electronica to appear, which caused a certain “riot” among fans. In total, there are three versions of Biljana: one played by Andrey, another by Mara Olney and the last of Sabrina Brier. (Gambiarra, among other things, who is the face of a prefabricated and somewhat banal pop genre of the 90s).

The reason is already clear from the way DJ Crazy Times views women: “Women are my favorite guy,” he says in one of the verses. Internet users began pointing out more Eurodance references with the choice: “replaceable” female singers who could lip-sync in the same voice. “DJ Crazy Times always stays true to what matters to him,” one user shouted in defense X (Twitter).

The creator did not imagine the “explosion” of the parody

Despite the feeling that there was “something special” around The planet of bass, Kyle Gordon didn’t imagine the parody would become “this big.” “I mean, I never imagined that people in Brazil would ask me questions about this topic,” he jokes in an interview Estadao.

DJ Crazy Times was not created by the comedian just to sing The planet of bass: She’s already a character who’s been with Kyle since college. “He was just a stupid character I played with my friends,” he comments.

The comedian even took it Crazy times for the shows he did in Brooklyn. The character, however, would only become a hit when he began appearing on TikTok in mid-2020.

Kyle Gordon plans more parodies, including one about bossa nova

The comedian says he doesn’t want to limit himself to just Eurodance: earlier this year he even recorded an entire album of parodies of different genres. The album, from which it takes its name Kyle Gordon is amazing (OR Kyle Gordon is amazingin Portuguese), in fact, it was then that the creator saw the opportunity to bet on a full version of The planet of bass.

“I think I’m interested in identifying and examining clichés [imagens universalmente reconhecidas]both in human behavior and in musical genres,” says the comedian. “In a way, every musical parody I make comes from first creating a character and then imagining the kind of music that character might make.”

After The planet of bassthe author decided to bet on a Brazilian rhythm: the bossanova, with a song sung by the character Antonio Frankfurt. “I wanted to get that ‘vibe’ [da bossa nova] and distort and inflate it to a cartoonish level, much more than I did The planet of basswhich is a very concrete and direct parody,” says Kyle, who said he has been exposed to the sound of artists like Astrud Gilberto AND Stan Getz during high school.

The parody, the full version of which was released this month, however, did not please Brazilian ears. “Have you ever listened to a bossa nova song?” one Internet user asked in a video posted on TikTok. “Bossa nova needs rhythm,” criticized another.

Some, however, argued that the comedian intended to represent how rhythm is seen through North American eyes, with problematic lyrics. “I think it refers to an idea that North American singers had when they composed horrible bossa nova songs,” said one user of the video network.

Kyle knows that his parodies can generate criticism and debate, but he says he doesn’t let himself be influenced by the discussions he creates on the internet. “I am a very resilient person. [a críticas] and carefree. With all my comedy, I just try to have as much fun as possible,” says the musician and comedian.
