“When Christine died, I felt you couldn’t replace her. You can’t,” he said in an interview with Vulture [via Rolling Stone]

Without it, what is it? You know what I mean? She was like my soulmate, my musical soulmate and my best friend who I spent more time with than any of my best friends outside of Fleetwood Mac.”

“Christine was my best friend. When I think of the song ‘You’re on Your Own, Kid’ by Taylor Swift, and in the phrase: “you always have been”, it was as if it were me and Christine. We always have been.” Stevie Nicks continued in the conversation. “We protected each other.”

“Who am I going to look to the right to make sure she’s not behind that Hammond organ? When she died, I knew we couldn’t go any further with this thing. There’s no reason for that,” said the singer.

Nicks also took advantage of the conversation to praise her bandmate: “And her songs, take away all those songs. Christine was the pop star. She wrote all these really super pop hits. None of us could write those songs.”

“What would happen is we would have to retire the songs, like we did when she retired for 18 years. We couldn’t recreate those songs. So we became a much more hard rock band,” explained.

Christine McVie, keyboardist of the legendary band, died in November 2022, aged 79.
