Kayode talks about Grammy nomination: ‘We are there with artistic quality and delivery’ [ENTREVISTA]

Rapper competes in the category of Best Music Video – Short Version, with ‘Podcast/Pedra da Memória’

Last month, the nominees for the 24th edition of the Latin Grammy, one of the most important awards in the recording industry. Among the representatives of Brazil, the rapper Kayode is one of the finalists in the “Best Music Video – Short Version” category, for the video for “Podcast/Memory Stone“, tracks from the artist’s debut album, Skin Flow(2022).

Kayode explains in an interview with Rolling Stone Brazil that making the album was like a process of discovery for him. “I spent a year and a half, two years producing tracks, looking for a path to follow, a sound, a musicality that made sense and matched the concept we wanted to present,” he explains.

I can say that the starting point of this perception was a song that came out in 2021 called “Hallelujah”. There we understood a sound that we couldn’t find on the market and it was something that I hadn’t done yet either. We found an artistic identity.”

From this moment Kayode and its producer Caio Paivawhom he makes a point of highlighting the importance of for the project, found a direction for what would become the Skin Flow. “Very much based on the central theme of the album, which is this perception of rhythm as an ancestral force capable of moving us, I believe that this creative process was based on that, me discovering myself artistically,” reports the rapper.

This is the first album by Kayode, but his career is already around 10 years old. For him, this effort is reflected in his appointment to the Grammy, which he classifies as something fair and natural, as it is the result of a lot of work, commitment and dedication. “I’m very happy because it’s a way of showing that you don’t necessarily need to have meteoric numbers, or be very famous for your art to be good.” Despite having been an independent artist for much of his career, today the rapper is part of Yalla Rec. “I have learned a lot about the market, but I can say that all these years have been a school, even though we are just starting out.”

Living up to its nomination, the film “Podcast/Memory Stone” delivers well-crafted visuals and a well-defined narrative, all with great taste in aesthetic terms, as well. The rapper understands that recognizing the aspect of his visual is equivalent to the lyrical part.

We took care and care about all parts of the work: the visuals, the audio, the marketing. We take all precautions. So I think we are being recognized for something that is impossible to ignore.”

The rapper reports that many fans end up getting to know his work from his music videos and, from that, know his lyrics. “They end up sticking with the message, they identify with it, they think it’s part of their story.”

The idea of combining two tracks into a clip came from the team at Paladin, who was responsible for directing the video. “They felt that one track would complete the other in terms of the plot of the short film,” she recalls. One of the reasons for this is to send a positive message at the end of the clip.

Kayode He says that the news of the nomination took him by surprise: “I have a habit of leaving my cell phone on airplane mode, when I went online there were a lot of people calling and sending me messages,” he says. The idea of being nominated for an award of this magnitude had not crossed his mind. “I never even thought about it, but we were very happy. We are there with artistic quality and delivery.”

The rapper says that he already feels greater recognition from the industry after the nomination and hopes to reap more rewards from this. When asked where he wants to go, Kayode confesses that he cannot measure where his music can reach.

I’m not the best person to tell you what to expect, I’m the person to do it. I like to work and go after it and we like to convert opportunities and results into even better things. Obviously I have plans, but I’m not able to say exactly what will happen.”

This is the first time that Kayode leaves the country and nothing could be more special than the ceremony of Latin Grammy, which this year takes place in Seville, Spain. Furthermore, the rapper is preparing the release of the deluxe version of Skin Flow, with some songs and more than five appearances. The artist ends by saying that this is “a slightly lighter version, but with a message and the same musicality.”
