From Radiohead to Miles Davis, the sounds of Austin Butler’s playlist

Austin Butler not only interpreted Elvis Presley in the biopic Elvis and even recorded part of the vocals. The actor is very interested in music: he taught himself to play the guitar and piano and uses his free time to, among other activities, compose and record his own songs.

The special relationship with Presley does not mean, however, that Butler listen only to rock and roll. In an interview with Rolling Stone USAthe star was invited to reveal which artists are on his daily playlist — and surprised with answers that mention icons from other musical genres.

The only name linked to rock highlighted by Austin it was the Radiohead, even though it is a group with less traditional origins within the style. The band’s discography led by Thom Yorke is marked by a series of experiments, including with electronic elements.

Along with the American group, Butler highlighted two other jazz icons: Chet Baker It is Miles Davis. Both trumpet players were seminal in the development of the so-called cool jazz, a subgenre with a softer and even more melancholic touch than other popular trends in the first half of the 20th century, such as hard bop. The actor commented:

“I hear a lot Chet Baker. I listen a lot Radiohead. Miles Davis. I’m also constantly listening to new music, but these are the things I listen to a lot in my house.”

Austin Butler and musical humor

During his statement, Austin Butler He pointed out that his personal playlist usually varies depending on the “mood”, or the occasion. And he took the opportunity to quote another music giant, in this case neo soul: D’Angelo.

“It depends on the mood you’re trying to get into. D’Angelo is also one of my favorite musicians and you know, at one point in the night, D’Angelo fits well when you’re hosting a dinner party or something like that. Or in the morning, with Chet Baker while the sun is rising, I think it’s perfect.”

At another point in the conversation, Butler was asked about his dressing style as he was at Paris Fashion Week. The actor highlighted his preference for a more timeless style.

“I’m attracted to the style of people like Paul Newman, Steve McQueen and Marlon Brando, as well as that quality where you can see someone’s image and it’s timeless. I don’t usually follow trends so much, I look for simplicity most of the time. I only use really good pieces. For me, it’s a lot about the fabric and a particular cut and the silhouette that a pair of pants gives. There are great images from when Brandon was doing A Streetcar Named Desire. And even when he was doing the play, you see him in rehearsals and he’s just wearing a white T-shirt and pants, and it fits him perfectly.”
