Phoebe Bridgers talked about the writing process for ‘Sidelines,’ a track from the Conversations With Friends soundtrack
Phoebe Bridgers talked about the new single “Sidelines” in an interview with Variety (via NME) and revealed how “it is a challenge” to write happier songs. The track is part of the soundtrack of Conversations With Friends (2022) and proved to be much more optimistic than the singer’s last album, punisher (2020).
“I’m pushing myself to do more stuff like that. I find it challenging to look smart and write better about happiness than sadness. In order not to sound trite, I lean towards darker subjects, just for comfort. I think a challenge for me right now is articulating about things that are good,” he said.
About the songwriting process, bridgers stated, “I wanted it to be hi-fi in some ways, beautiful and cinematic, and lo-fi in other ways, and it was really hard to find that balance.”
The singer also praised the writing of Sally Rooneyauthor of the work that inspired Conversations With Friends. “I think the writing of Sally is so beautiful and perfect, and Normal people it affected me deeply too, in totally different ways,” he said.
