The AC/DC song that Angus Young “suffers” to play live

The band has a reputation for making songs that are “easy” to play on the guitar, but the rule does not apply to all compositions

O AC DC is one of rock’s most beloved bands. With millions of records sold across the planet, in addition to a history of touring large arenas for decades, the group formed in Australia is notable for its heavy and straight-to-the-point sound.

There are those who say that the guitar lines created by the band leaders, the guitarists Angus and Malcolm Young (the latter already deceased), are easy to reproduce. However, this argument is not always proven in practice.

In a 2020 interview with Vulture, Angus Young highlighted that there is a specific song from the repertoire of AC DC which often gets him into trouble at shows. Its about “Thunderstruck”song released in 1990 as part of the album The Razors Edge.

On the occasion, the artist was invited to reveal the “guitar solo” that serves as the greatest “endurance test”. He did not hesitate when quoting “Thunderstruck”. In his explanation, however, he seemed to address the track’s introduction more than the solo itself, at its core.

“This song was written while I was messing around with an acoustic guitar, and Malcolm heard what I was playing and kept pestering me about it, saying, ‘You should keep working on this!’. When you hear it, everything falls into place. But when we play it live, I have to sit for an hour and make sure my fingers are warmed up to play it. It has an unrelenting complexity. I have to be confident every time I play it.”

The favorite

Still during the interview, Angus Young was invited to name the best song on the album. AC DC in your opinion. The guitarist divided himself between two songs: “Riff Raff”from the album Powerage (1978), and the “Thunderstruck”.

“Oh, damn. This one can be very difficult to answer. I’m biased because I’ve been on all these songs, you know? [Risos] If I were just thinking about guitar, since I’m a guitarist, I would say ‘Riff Raff’. The guitar work was a challenge, but the way the song developed was interesting. That’s my guitar answer. But if it’s for a whole song, ‘Thunderstruck’ it’s a good one. I like that answer.”
