Singer Tulipa Ruiz spoke to Rolling Stone Brasil during the Sangue Novo Festival and talked about her latest Grammy nomination

Tulipa Ruiz has one more reason to celebrate his nomination to the Latin Grammy: her album Habilidades Extraordinárias, for which she was nominated, is a completely independent work. In an interview with Rolling Stone Brazilthe artist, who was highlighted on the first day of New Blood Festivalin Salvador, Bahia, said that being at a world-renowned award show again gives him an extra boost to continue his artistic journey.

“The Grammy is a seal of approval, it is a universally known award, it legitimizes and strengthens my work, especially as a songwriter”, said the São Paulo native, who took the opportunity to detail how proud she is of the success of her most recent album.

Extraordinary Abilities It’s an album I recorded in my studio with Gustavo Ruiz, my brother and producer of the album. It’s an album that didn’t have any sponsorship, there wasn’t a record company, so it’s an album that we made very much in the race, very independent. It’s an album that didn’t have any momentum, so this album reached people in a very organic way. We don’t pay algorithms.”

Produced during the pandemic, Extraordinary Abilities it got its name because of an experience that Tulipa faced while trying to get a visa for a tour in the United States, in 2019. “In the interview to get the visa, they asked me if I had any ‘extraordinary abilities’ and I answered no, because in My mind’s extraordinary ability is to fly”, she said, and only later came to understand that it was a professional feat or international recognition, like winning a Grammy.

In recent years, the partnership between Tulipa Ruiz and Gustavo Ruiz became even stronger with the arrival of the studio Brocalresponsible for recording projects for names like Linn da Quebrada It is Liniker, in addition to Tulipa herself. For the artist, working with her brother is very easy.

“Gustavo is the producer of all my records and Extraordinary Skills It’s the first album we recorded in our studio, A Brocal. We work a lot together because of this, because we have a very fluid partnership, so it’s been really cool”, she says, adding: “It’s very practical because we enjoy it together, we have similar friends. We have a very similar repertoire of life, so things flow very easily.”

Special connection with Salvador

After presenting an electric show full of hits to an audience of insatiable Bahian fans at the Sangue Novo Festival, Tulipa Ruiz has no doubt that she has a special connection with the Bahian capital. “Since the first time I came to play here in Salvador, with the Ephemerait was something different”, he recalls.

“It’s not that people just knew how to sing the songs on the albums, they had incorporated the songs on the albums and amalgamated them with their own experiences, with their own repertoires. Each one had a relationship with the songs on the albums.”

The singer confesses that she made a promise to herself involving her Bahian fans, but she hasn’t been able to keep it. “If it were up to me alone, all my debuts would be here. Because it’s different here, there’s something really exciting that is very nutritious for our music”, she concludes.
