Understand the cover of Green Day’s new album

‘Saviors’, Green Day’s new album, will be released on January 19th

green Day announced a new album and has already released the first single, “The American Dream Is Killing Me”, this Tuesday, 24. The cover of Saviors shows a black and white photograph of a boy with a stone in front of something that is on fire, and the band’s choice raised several theories among fans.

According to the BBCthe image dated 1978 was made by Chris Steele-Perkins, during the so-called conflicts in Northern Ireland. The boy with the stone would be, more specifically, on Falls Road, in Belfast. The political disputes that lasted around 30 years took the lives of more than 3500 people.

Fans speculate, on Reddit, that the band’s cover indicates a return to Belfast, a capital that hasn’t been visited since 2017 (via BBC). Himself GreenDayhowever, commented on the meaning of the album and the photo:

What is the Saviorsyou ask. […] Disease, war, inequality, influencers, yoga retreats, alt-right, dating apps, masks, MENTAL HEALTH, climate change, oligarchs, social media division, legal marijuana, fentanyl, fragility… What Andy Warhol would make? What John Waters would make? What Quentin Tarantino would make? What the GREEN DAY would make?
